Postdoc (Bioethics), The Hastings Center

Closing date: Applications reviewed as received.

Fellowship to begin “ideally within calendar 2021, but not later than Fall 2022”.

The Hastings Center seeks applications for a 3-year, full-time fellowship position. This position offers a superb opportunity for an early career scholar to devote themselves to research and public outreach on questions of national and international significance. The Hastings Center is a world-renowned bioethics research institute with an active research portfolio, outstanding collaborative relationships with researchers and institutions in the US and around the world, and a strong commitment to public engagement, including through outreach to journalists, policymakers, opinion leaders, and other audiences.

Candidates should be committed to collegial, interdisciplinary work. Approximately half of this position will be devoted to their own scholarship, and the other half to advancing the work of The Hastings Center. The successful applicant will receive mentorship and supervision from established and highly successful researchers and participate in the dynamic programs of research and public engagement. While areas of specialization and methodologies are open, we encourage applications from scholars with an interest in ethical issues related to justice, health care reform, health policy, artificial intelligence and digital health, environmental ethics, and neuroscience. For the right candidate, this is a powerful opportunity to build a robust research portfolio at The Hastings Center.

The successful candidate will have completed their dissertation within the last 3 years. The successful candidate also will be eager to step up and contribute to the Center’s ongoing work, including helping to write grants, the content of which may be beyond the Fellow’s usual academic comfort zone. Evidence of interest in reaching beyond the academy to a broader public audience will be viewed highly favorably.

Candidates must already have the right to work in the U.S. (e.g., they must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents).

To apply: Upload a letter of application, a 500-word statement of research interests, a resume or CV, and contact information for three references here. Questions sent to jobs@thehastingscenter.org will be answered promptly. Applications will be held in confidence.

Application deadline: Applications will be reviewed as they are received. The Fellowship will begin as soon as possible, ideally within calendar 2021, but not later than Fall 2022. It includes a competitive salary and modest travel funds to present one’s work to others, plus health insurance, generous vacation, sick leave and holiday schedules. The Hastings Center is an equal opportunity employer, committed to building a diverse staff and creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
